As an Occupational Environmental Health and Safety Professional with over 20 years of experience, I have trained and reared first responder teams in manufacturing and warehousing environments, have seen multiple work-related injuries and medical emergencies firsthand and in many cases was the first responder providing care.

 

While most, if not all, companies are required to ensure there is a properly trained first responder on site at all times (usually a designated person or a team), it is financially impractical to fund 100% of employees for this first responder training. 

 

One day, at one of the larger facilities under my responsibility, a serious on-the-job injury occurred. The incident required a fast response to prevent further injury but, the only trained first responders were too far on the other end of the facility. Fortunately, although not trained, three of his colleagues were near and assisted the best they could for is rescue until first responders and paramedics arrived. 

 

The injured employee delt with a long recovery and for me, it was cause for reflection and concern, not just on the injured, but also on his rescuing colleagues’ untrained (luckily successful) rescue.

 

I thought “What if they were at home, or the park with their families and they had to respond to an emergency as such, untrained?
